The nightlife and shopping district in the vicinity of the university is a living, breathing expression of art in motion. In the 1980s, there were pockets of pubs, small restaurants, used-book stores, art supply stores and art institutions. However, since the 90s, the place has boomed with eclectic restaurants, unique cafes, a dazzling nightlife, and a rowdy underground. In the daytime, the area is popular for its shopping and coffee talk, but at night, things really light up, when hordes of young Koreans and foreigners converge on the area to take in what the night has to offer. Whether its hip-hop, trip-hop, punk, or even folk, the Hongdae music scene has it. In particular, Hongdae is the place for live-clubs and watching underground stars perform in clubs or spilling out onto the streets. - Club day : The area surrounding Hongik University, or 'Hongdae' (홍대) as it's affectionately called, is the center of Korea's youthful nightlife. Many of Seoul's idiosyncratic clubs that draws the younger set are clustered in the area, and on the last Friday of every month these clubs host a 'Club Day.' The Hongdae Club Day was first started in 2001 as a way to promote the club business, and has since become a staple as a festival of youth. A 15,000 won ticket gains party-goers admittance into 11 clubs, with one drink on the house. It is an ideal place for people who find dancing and music irresistible. Head over to Hongdae Club Day on the last Friday of the month. A wild gathering of young adults from all over the world is waiting.- Sound day: There are two such events - Club day and Sound day. 'Sound Day' is the independent music version of 'Club Day' that happens on the 2nd Friday. These are basically wristband-powered events which allow entry to more than a dozen clubs for the price of one. Sound day events happen at night and a good number of indie Korean and Japanese bands perform live in clubs all over Hongdae district.- Free Market and Music Performance at the playground park : People carrying heavy bags in their hands gather in twos and threes in a playground near Hongik University. They spread a piece of cloth on a small table or on the ground and display a variety of items on it. The playground becomes something like a flea market. Soon more people show up and shoppers begin bargaining for the items they like. This is the free-market, not flea-market. It looks like a typical flea market, but there is one big difference. While a flea market is a place where second-hand goods are sold, the free market in the Hongik University area is an art market where people display and sell their artwork. Some of the items on display include hand-stitched dolls, cell phone charms made with painted bottle caps, silver necklaces and matching earrings, and diaries with hand-made covers, to name only a few. All the items put out for sale at the free market are unique hand-made crafts. Music in the market Over 100 stalls at the free market brim with a variety of items, including accessories, bags, t-shirts and dolls - each as unique as the artist. As all are hand-made, you had better buy as soon as you find the one you like - you won't find exactly the same one elsewhere. Jazz music is performed by underground musicians at one corner of the market. Underground bands such as Oh Brothers, Mr. Punky, Plastic People, and Sorri, unveil their latest music here. Various artistic and creative programs such as songpyeon making and tasting and scarecrow making are also held. Stroll around the market and you will find so many items too attractive to resist. A demonstration by glass artists, music performances, and hundreds of unique art works make one Saturday too short.
