I was really surprised when I arrived at UGAYA as reviews I had read were great.The place was freezing,our two bed dorm was infact a small space at the side of the 6 bed dorm.A third bed occupied our space, which could have been used.The heater could only go on in the room at 9pm, and despite there being a kitchen in the guesthouse this could only be used for boiling water.

I think this is a good place to stay as long as the weather is warm. Otherwise you`re in for a very cold night. They have one heater upstairs to heat the dorms, and you`re not allowed to put it on till 9pm, and it also makes the room smell quite fumey!
Other than that we had a alright time.

Nice hostel with a convenient location for JR Nara and Nara attractions. Some staff members have limited English, but all are very friendly and helpful. Plenty of maps, books, resources, etc. to help you plan exploration of Nara. Cute common room where they play jazz, lots of character, but kind of tiny so I didn't find it very social. The kitchen can only be used to boil water, not to cook.

The staff were incredibly friendly, some of the nicest I've come across. Downstairs had a really nice atmosphere. Upstairs still needs some work to make it nicer,(you can tell this is a new hostel), it has the potential to be really good.

Staff were excellent - very helpful! The private rooms are accessed by walking through the dorms though - otherwise a nice place to stay.

maybe because of the situation as being in the right in the heart of old capital city of Nara, this place is so quiet and very relaxing...great for those who want to start herhis day early to see as many temples as one can(which also means not so much lively night attraction)... japanese young shy yet friendly male staffs are comforting for female single travellers.

Had a fabulous time staying here, althought the 11pm curfew was a dampener to say the least! Wonderful staff and fantastic guesthouse. Highly recommended, particularly if you need an early night!
