I highly recommend Shimaya as a nice and not expensive place to stay if you want to visit Monkey park,Obuse town or Shiba Kogen Ski Area. It is a place were you can feel hospitality of Japan and enjoy its traditional views and food. We had a great time spending 2 nights at Shimaya in winter. The location of the hotel is very convenient - 8 min walk from Yudanaka station, rooms are clean and nicely arranged and owners are very careful with there guests. Many thanks to Shimaya Ryokan.

We had a very relaxing time in this well run onsen, the owner and his wife were lovely. We loved the whole village there were some great little eateries and of course the snow monkeys! Well worth the trip.

The comments regarding the hospitality of the ryokan owner were all true: he kindly drove me to the monkey park as well as to the spa in the mountains which would have been out of my reach otherwise. Thank you!

I could not fault Shimaya Ryokan, we were taken to the monkey park and outdoor onsen (and private onsen was arranged for us).....also very close to the station, cheap eats etc

A tiny bit old fashion but pleasant place to stay. The owner is very helpful. He drove us to the monkey park and gave us plenty of information about other places to visit and nice restaurants in the area. The rooms were very big and the onsen is really nice!

Great place to stay. the owner is wonderful and will help you out any way he can. ask him for tips on where to eat, we had some wonderful meals!! will go back and stay here for the ski season in 2010 for sure!!

I would put 200% if it was possible :) Its more than a ryokan, owners advice and help you to have great time by transporting by car, advice some good place and being so kind.
