I'm from Switzerland and the first choice to stay in New-York who is safe,fun and cheaper is Hostelling International NY.
I recommend that place to everybody who want to go to visit that wonderful city.
You won't be disappointed.

The bathrooms left much to be desired. Also, i requested a female dorm, and got a 'co-ed' dorm (which meant me + 5 guys). Nicely located on 2 subway lines, and towels were provided. breakfast is NOT, however.

one of the best hostels i've been to! it's actually more like a hotel and you'll meet some old people here and there... but it's a very safe, clean and nice place! location is fine and it's pretty close to the metro. i have been in numerous other hostels in nyc and this is by far the best deal!!!

Good if you want safety and a good night's sleep, bun not much atmosphere - no drinking allowed and just too big

A great hostel, relatively clean and well kept, friendly, helpful staff!! Fine for someone wanting cheap accomodation in NYC. A little far uptown however very close to the subway which made it ok! Would stay there again!!
